Soldier John Ford aka Director John Ford was forced to leave his duty(and his men) in the Armed Services behind in order to return to Hollywood to direct this film, They Were Expendable. Some believe it was his still recent experience with war that made the film so accurate in its portrayal of the bond that develops between soldiers and the sense of despair that they share. They Were Expendable features Robert Montgomery, John Wayne and Donna Reed. The film screening on May 30th will be introduced by Mary Anne Owen, daughter of Donna Reed. She will also be reading GI letters that were written to her mother during WWII.
