Huge List of Free Movie Events- Summer 2010

Are you looking for something fun to do this summer in Boston that will accommodate your limited budget? How about attending a free movie screening?

There are many opportunities to see free movies and classic films in the City of Boston during the 2010 Summer season. Here is an overview of what’s to come as far as free movies in Boston go. The listings below are organized by program and account for the months of July and August. Made in Massachusetts Free Film Series
The Made in Massachusetts film series is a year long program created at Boston Public Library to celebrate movies that were filmed in the state of Massachusetts.

A new film is presented at 6pm on the Monday of each week. The free movie events are open to the public and take place in the Rabb Lecture Hall of the Boston Public Library’s Central Location at 700 Boylston Street, Boston, MA 02116. The facilities are wheelchair accessible.

The movie selections, which include both new hits as well as older classics, are chosen according to a predetermined monthly title. July’s free movie theme is “Danger in the Water”. The August films fall under “Comedy”.

The lineup of free films at the Boston Public Library for the remainder of the summer is as follows:

July 6- Captains Courageous
July 12- Moby Dick
July 19- Jaws
July 26- The Perfect Storm

August 2- The Russians are Coming! The Russians are Coming!
August 9- Last Detail
August 16- Mermaids
August 23- Amos and Andrew

Humphrey Bogart Film Series
The South Boston Branch of the Boston Public Library offers free films on Thursdays at 6pm as part of the Humphrey Bogart Film Series. The free movie lineup for July is as follows:

July 1: Angels with Dirty Faces
July 8: High Sierra Trailer
July 15: Passage to Marseilles Trailer
July 22: To Have and Have Not Trailer
July 29: We're No Angels

Miss Marple Mystery Matinee Free Film Series
The South Boston Branch of the Boston Public Library presents free screenings of the movies featuring the character “Miss Marple”, as based on the Agatha Christie crime novels. The Miss Marple Mystery Matinee films occur on Tuesdays at 1pm at the South Boston Branch (646 East Broadway, South Boston, 02127). The lineup for July 2010 is as follows:

July 6: Sleeping Murder
July 13: A Caribbean Mystery
July 20: 4:50 from Paddington
July 27: Murder at the Vicarage



Free Friday Flicks at the Hatch Shell
The Free Friday Flicks free movie series celebrates its 25th Anniversary this year. The program, presented by WBZ NewsRadio 1030 and the DCR offers free HD movies every Friday night at the DCR Hatch Shell on the Charles River Esplanade. All movies are family friendly. Guests are encouraged to bring blankets, chairs and picnic materials to set up on the lawn. Games, food samples, free giveaways and other such activities begin at 6pm and the movies will start at sunset, around 8:30pm. In the case of rain, the Free Friday Flicks Hotline at 617-787-7200 will have cancellation information.

Movies by Moonlight at Boston Harbor Hotel
The Boston Harbor Hotel at Rowes Wharf (70 Rowes Wharf, Boston 02110) presents a free movie every Friday at dusk from June 18 through September 3rd. Here is a lineup of the classic films to be screened during July and August of 2010:

July 9-The Maltese Falcon
July 16- Field of Dreams
July 23- An Affair to Remember
July 30- Some Like it Hot

August 6- All About Eve

Avenue of the Arts Film Festival
This year’s Avenue of the Arts Film Festival will take place from July 15 to July 23rd at the West End Branch of the Boston Public Library. The festival, directed by Artist and Designer, LB Gratun, will feature free film screenings (among many other activities such as live music and food offerings) that correspond with the theme Food for Health. Food for Thought. Food for Change.

Free Films for Seniors
The Never Too Late Group at the Boston Public Library was created for older adults with the idea in mind that it’s never too late to learn. This summer the program presents a series of free movies. The schedule is as follows for July and August 2010:

Musicals From Then and Now
The North End Branch of the Boston Public Library shows free movies on Wednesdays at 6pm as part of the Musicals From Then and Now Free Film Series.

Monday Matinees in Dorchester
The Adams Street Branch of the BPL offers the following free movie matinees during July:

Hepburn and Tracy Summer Film Series
The Boston Public Library has yet another program offering free films to the public this summer, this one dedicated to Katharine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy and the movies in which the two star. The Hepburn and Tracy Summer Film Series presents the following free films for the months of July and August of 2010.

July 1- Keeper of the Flame
July 8- Woman of the Year
July 15- Without Love
July 22- The Sea of Grass
July 29- State of the Union

August 5- Adam’s Rib
August 12-Pat and Mike
August 19- Desk Set

Magic 106.7 Family Film Festival
The Third Annual Magic 106.7 Family Film Festival will show free family friendly movies at The Prudential Center each Saturday at sundown from July 17 through August 21. In addition to the free film screenings, there will also be a variety of activities to keep you entertained from 6pm on.

The free movie schedule has not yet been announced but you can check back here for updates.

The Prudential Center is located in Boston’s Back Bay Neighborhood at 800 Boylston Street, Boston, 02199. The Family Film Festival events will take place in the South Garden.





Summer in the Parks 2010 Outdoor Film Series
This free film series is presented by The Brookline Parks and Open Spaces Division and the Brookline Recreation Department. This year’s theme is Monster Splash!

The free family friendly movies will be shown at the Devotion School Field, 345 Harvard Street, which is right up the street from Coolidge Corner in Brookline. Show times are at sundown (8:30-ish) and the cancellation info hotline in case of rain is 617-730-2087.

Summer Movie Madness @ MIT
The MIT Lecture Series Committee (LSC) presents Free Summer Films. The movies will take place on Fridays and Saturdays at 8pm in Room 26-100 of the 77 Mass. Ave. building on the MIT Campus. (Directions) This is within walking distance to the Kendall/MIT T Stop on the Red Line MBTA Train.
