Remarkable September Events

The September calendar month is loaded with fun stuff to do in the Boston and Cambridge areas and beyond. I managed to compile a list of as many of the best events I could find, but as the month goes on and more are announced, I will be posting updates through this post/link.

During the weekend of September 10-12, Franklin Park Zoo will offer special activities to celebrate the upcoming birth of a new gorilla to expectant mother, Kiki. The Tropical Rainforest, which is where the gorilla family lives, will be fully decorated for the baby shower; visitors can also look forward to baby themed treats. Anyone who brings a gift for Kiki will receive discounted admission. Gifts will be donated to Room to Grow, a charity for needy families with newborn children. Arlington Arts and Music Festival

The festival will take place in Spy Pond Park in Arlington and will include live music, arts and crafts, poetry, performances, and a chance to volunteer a little time to keep the park beautiful. Please note that some of the activities may cost money, the funds of which will be donated to the Friends of Spy Pond Park. The park is located along the eastern shore of Spy Pond, about a block west of Massachusetts Avenue between East Arlington and Arlington Center.



Musicfest Live! 2010

The Benjamin Franklin Institute of Technology presents MusicFest! 2010, a family friendly music concert event to raise funds for the students in the college who need financial aid, which is apparently, 81% of them. The show will feature live local bands, Kingsley Flood and Liptease, who will be competing for the audience's vote to win recording time to further their career. Musicfest! Live will also offer activities for children.



Boston Kermesse 2010 Armenian Festival

The Armenian Festival in Watertown has become a huge open air event, with live music, authentic food and more activities designed to celebrate the Armenian history and culture. Featured entertainment will include Armenichik (Sat.), John Berberian and his Ensemble featuring Onnik Dinkjian, Arev Ensemble and many others. The festival will also offer a special kids' section with a Bounce House, Basketball Shoot, Gladiator Joust and Floating Baseball Game. Get Tickets.



Allston Village Street Fair aka Urban Mardi Gras Festival

The Annual Allston Village Street Fair, produced by The Parents and Community Building Group, Inc., will offer a full day of live entertainment (on 3 Stages), multicultural activities, an international food court, a marketplace of artists and vendors, prize giveaways and more, all suitable for adults as well as children. Europe's Grand Operas @ the Coolidge: AIDA

The Coolidge Corner Theatre, as part of the Europe's Grand Operas program, will feature Verdi's AIDA,, as seen at the 2009 Bregenz Festival in Austria, where it was produced in the middle of a lake. Brazilian Independence Day Festival

The outdoor festival to celebrate Brazilian Independence Day will offer a fun filled day with numerous activities suitable for adults as well as children. There will be ethnic foods, info and resources booths, face painting, pony rides, live dance and music entertainment and more. The festival will kickoff at noon with a performance of the Brazilian National Anthem by Daniela Speziale and a parade with Marcus Santos and AfroBrazil. New England Revolution star, Brazilian Roberto "Betu" Linck also plans to be present at the festival for a special meet and greet.

As part of the Made in Massachusetts free film series, the Boston Public Library presents Love Story, for the September "Back to School" theme. Love Story, based on the best-selling novel (Arthur Hiller), won an Academy Award for Best Original Music and includes scenes from Cambridge, South Hamilton and Harvard University.


Health and Wellness Fair

The Health and Wellness Fair will feature four 30-minute demonstrations from 13-15 companies:

Boston Beauty Sample Sale

Pretty City and Shape Magazine present The Beauty Sample Sale private party, an opportunity to sample, for free, all sorts of beauty services and products from leading brands in hair care, skin care, cosmetics, etc. There will also be food and drinks to taste. The event costs $25 a ticket, which must be purchased in advance to get access to the free samples and a take-home sample-filled goodie bag. You must be age 21 or over to attend The Beauty Sample Sale.

2010 New England Dessert Showcase

The New England Dessert Showcase produced by The Anthem Group will bring some of the finest food experts and establishments together to showcase some of their best desserts. Guests can expect to see exhibits, performances and lots of samples from restaurants, bakeries, chocolatiers, specialty cake designers, pastry chefs, designer confectioners, frozen desserts and ice cream makers and dessert wine producers. Tickets start at $15. Get them here.

In addition to the main event there will also be an opening night party and live music concert on Friday, September 17th, which is open to everyone with a Showcase ticket; RSVP required. More information.


Comics for a Cure Comedy Showcase

The Museum of Science presents College Night, an opportunity for students with a valid college ID to explore the Exhibit Halls free of charge. The special evening event will also include Omni and 3-D Digital Cinema Shows, Theater of Electricity demos, stargazing at the Gilliland Observatory, hot and cold experiments in the Suit/Cabot Lab, live presentations, and a raffle. Musical entertainment will also be provided by KISS 108FM. Parking will be available for free at the museum.

The ArtsEmerson Paramount Center will host an Inaugural Weekend Celebration Open House, in which they will open their doors to give the public a free opportunity to check out the historical theater, view films and/or watch a few short plays. Golden Globe Nominee, Mona Lisa Smile, will show at the Boston Public Library as part of the Made in Massachusetts free film series' "Back to School" theme for September. The film, starring Kirsten Dunst, Julia Stiles and Maggie Gyllenhaal, is set in 1953 at Wellesley College and includes scenes from the campus.

Boston Public Library presents a free screening of Good Will Hunting for the September "Back to School" theme for the Made in Massachusetts free film series year-long program. Good Will Hunting won Oscars for Best Supporting Actor and Best Screenplay and was written by Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, who also star in the film.
