Going to the museum doesn't have to be expensive. Get your timing right and you might be able to get in for free. Here's an overview of various free museum admission programs and a few 'not free but cheaper' promotions that will at least save you a few bucks on the museum tickets.

On the last Saturday of every month except December, families of up to two adults with children 12 and under can enjoy free admission to the Institute of Contemporary Art.

Members of the public are invited to Forest Hills in Jamaica Plain to celebrate the memories of their loved ones who have passed. The annual Lantern Festival is a tradition based on the Japanese Bon Festival, where visitor decorate paper lanterns with calligraphy and messages for their dead loved ones and at sunset, send them afloat in a small lake. Thousands gather to participate in this festival every year and with all of the candle lit lanterns set adrift at once, the sight is sure to be both breathtaking and emotional. The Lantern Festival at Forest Hills will also offer multi-cultural dance and music entertainment.
Admission to the festival is free with a requested $10 donation per lantern. Picnic and blankets as well as mosquito repellent and flashlights are encouraged. For more information or directions to Forest Hills Cemetery, visit foresthillstrust.org.

Members of the public are invited to Forest Hills in Jamaica Plain to celebrate the memories of their loved ones who have passed. The annual Lantern Festival is a tradition based on the Japanese Bon Festival, where visitor decorate paper lanterns with calligraphy and messages for their dead loved ones and at sunset, send them afloat in a small lake. Thousands gather to participate in this festival every year and with all of the candle lit lanterns set adrift at once, the sight is sure to be both breathtaking and emotional. The Lantern Festival at Forest Hills will also offer multi-cultural dance and music entertainment.

Have you been wanting to visit the Franklin Park Zoo but have been putting it off because of your lack of transportation?
Or maybe you didn't realize how close this animal attraction was to Downtown Boston. For the record, it is actually located 5 miles outside of the city, in Dorchester, at One Franklin Park Road. But if you go on July 10th or 17th you won't need to know those facts because the zoo is offering free shuttle rides from a couple different pick up stops in Downtown Boston.
The free shuttle to the Franklin Park Zoo will operate between 10am and 4pm continuously on July 10 (this weekend) and July 17th.
The pickup locations are as follows:
*Trinity Place @ St. James, adjacent to the Copley Fairmont Plaza Hotel, Boston Back Bay
*Washington St @ Avery, in front of BiNA Osteria, Downtown Crossing.
There will be an attendant and signs at both stops.
The trip to and from the zoo will take about 15-20 minutes each way and will take passengers on a first come first served basis. The shuttle will be dropping people off after they visit the zoo at the same locations where they were picked up.

It’s almost time again for the summer series of free Shakespeare plays on the Common, presented by the Commonwealth Shakespeare Company in partnership with the City of Boston and Mayor Menino. The play this year is Othello, directed by Steven Maler.
The free Shakespeare shows will take place Tuesdays through Saturdays at 8pm and Sundays at 7pm from July 28 through August 15, 2010. There will also be a special matinee performance on August 8 at 2pm. In case of heavy rain or lightning storms the show will be cancelled. If the weather is questionable, the Weather Hotline at 617-426-0863 ext.7 (call one to two hours before show) will inform you of that night’s show status.
This event is free and open to the public. Blankets, picnics and (short) lawn or beach chairs are encouraged. Note that those who must watch the performance using a tall beach chair will be required to sit in a special “tall beach chair section”.
An estimated 100,000 people, from Boston and beyond, are predicted to attend 18 performances. It has been the trend in previous years that people begin to arrive up to two hours prior to the start of the show to grab the hot spots on the lawn; it fills up quickly.
The stage will be set up at the Parkman Bandstand on the Boston Common. This location is accessible to the Boylston and Park Street T-Stations on the Green Line, the Chinatown and Downtown Crossing T-Stops on the Orange Line and the Park Street stop on the Red. If you are driving in for the event, you might consider the Boston Common Garage if circling around for a parking spot on the street gets exhausting. Made in Massachusetts Free Film Series
The Made in Massachusetts film series is a year long program created at Boston Public Library to celebrate movies that were filmed in the state of Massachusetts.
A new film is presented at 6pm on the Monday of each week. The free movie events are open to the public and take place in the Rabb Lecture Hall of the Boston Public Library’s Central Location at 700 Boylston Street, Boston, MA 02116. The facilities are wheelchair accessible.
The movie selections, which include both new hits as well as older classics, are chosen according to a predetermined monthly title. July’s free movie theme is “Danger in the Water”. The August films fall under “Comedy”.

Made in Massachusetts Free Film Series
The Made in Massachusetts film series is a year long program created at Boston Public Library to celebrate movies that were filmed in the state of Massachusetts.
A new film is presented at 6pm on the Monday of each week. The free movie events are open to the public and take place in the Rabb Lecture Hall of the Boston Public Library’s Central Location at 700 Boylston Street, Boston, MA 02116. The facilities are wheelchair accessible.
The movie selections, which include both new hits as well as older classics, are chosen according to a predetermined monthly title. July’s free movie theme is “Danger in the Water”. The August films fall under “Comedy”.

Free Friday Flicks at the Hatch Shell
The Free Friday Flicks free movie series celebrates its 25th Anniversary this year. The program, presented by WBZ NewsRadio 1030 and the DCR offers free HD movies every Friday night at the DCR Hatch Shell on the Charles River Esplanade. All movies are family friendly. Guests are encouraged to bring blankets, chairs and picnic materials to set up on the lawn. Games, food samples, free giveaways and other such activities begin at 6pm and the movies will start at sunset, around 8:30pm. In the case of rain, the Free Friday Flicks Hotline at 617-787-7200 will have cancellation information.

The Third Annual Magic 106.7 Family Film Festival will show free family friendly movies at The Prudential Center each Saturday at sundown from July 17 through August 21. In addition to the free film screenings, there will also be a variety of activities to keep you entertained from 6pm on.

The Boston Harborfest 2010 Fourth of July Festival will celebrate its 29th anniversary this year. The Harborfest Boston Festival consists of six full days of over 200 activities, designed to explore Boston's colonial and maritime history and celebrate the significant role the city had in defining America. As part of the Play Date events series, the Institute of Contemporary Art invites kids 12 and under and their families for a free tour of the museum and a hands on design workshop where they will be able to redesign the City of Boston and make a few souvenirs to take home. At 2pm, MIT Urban Designers will lead a hands on class in the Art Lab involving idea for the Boston Waterfront.

Children of all ages are invited to the Boston Public Garden to take part in a celebration of the Childrens Book Classic, "Make Way for Ducklings" by Robert McCloskey. The Harvard University Marching Band will lead the kids, who are encouraged to dress up as their favorite ducky characters, in a parade in which they retrace the steps of the ducks as told in the book. The parade will begin at noon but get there as early as 10:30am to pre-register and enjoy the entertainment. The meeting place is on the Boston Common at the base of the Shaw Memorial below the State House. Harvard Film Archive presents Rodrigo D.: No Future (Rodrigo D. no futuro) by Director Victor Gaviria about a character who, in the midst of poverty, abandons his dreams of becoming a drummer in a punk band and turns to a life of violent crime. This film is noted for Gaviria's skillful blend of realism with other styles and for the use of music to show a contrast of happiness in the life of Rodrigo D. Rodrigo D.: No Future was the first film directed by Gaviria, who will make a special appearance at the screening on May 9th. (Note: Gaviria will also be present for screenings of his films The Rose Seller (La vendedora de rosas) on May 7th and Additions and Subtractions (Medellin: sumas y restas) on May 8th; both, also, at the Carpenter Center for the Arts).
