SomerMovie Fest 2010
From now through August 26, free movies will be shown in various Somerville parks every Thursday night at Dusk as part of the SomerMovie Fest 2010 free summer film series.

Family Film Festival at The Pru
The Prudential Center has announced the free movie schedule for the Magic 106.7 Family Film Festival. As a reminder, the family films will be shown every Saturday at Sundown a The Prudential Center's South Garden. The Prudential Center is located at 800 Boylston Street, Boston, 02199.

Scene on the Green
The Scene on the Green Program offers free family movies in Cambridge through August 18, 2010. The free films will screen at various Cambridge locations each Wednesday at 7pm. There will also be entertainments such as music, clowns, jugglers and magicians. Scene on the Green is brought to us courtesy of the City of Cambridge Department of Human Service Programs Recreation, Youth and Community Schools Divisions. For more information call 617-349-6200.

Free Movies on the Beach
The Revere Recreation Department presents a free movie night on Revere Beach on Thursdays during the summer at Dusk. Family friendly activities such as Jim the DJ and Pick a Party will begin as early as 6pm. The movies, whose titles have yet (as far as I can tell) to be announced, will screen at varying locations according to week.

Members of the public are invited to Forest Hills in Jamaica Plain to celebrate the memories of their loved ones who have passed. The annual Lantern Festival is a tradition based on the Japanese Bon Festival, where visitor decorate paper lanterns with calligraphy and messages for their dead loved ones and at sunset, send them afloat in a small lake. Thousands gather to participate in this festival every year and with all of the candle lit lanterns set adrift at once, the sight is sure to be both breathtaking and emotional. The Lantern Festival at Forest Hills will also offer multi-cultural dance and music entertainment.
Admission to the festival is free with a requested $10 donation per lantern. Picnic and blankets as well as mosquito repellent and flashlights are encouraged. For more information or directions to Forest Hills Cemetery, visit foresthillstrust.org.

There are many opportunities to see free movies and classic films in the City of Boston during the 2010 Summer season. Here is an overview of what’s to come as far as free movies in Boston go. The listings below are organized by program and account for the months of July and August. Made in Massachusetts Free Film Series
The Made in Massachusetts film series is a year long program created at Boston Public Library to celebrate movies that were filmed in the state of Massachusetts.
A new film is presented at 6pm on the Monday of each week. The free movie events are open to the public and take place in the Rabb Lecture Hall of the Boston Public Library’s Central Location at 700 Boylston Street, Boston, MA 02116. The facilities are wheelchair accessible.
The movie selections, which include both new hits as well as older classics, are chosen according to a predetermined monthly title. July’s free movie theme is “Danger in the Water”. The August films fall under “Comedy”.

The South Boston Branch of the Boston Public Library presents free screenings of the movies featuring the character “Miss Marple”, as based on the Agatha Christie crime novels. Free Friday Flicks at the Hatch Shell
The Free Friday Flicks free movie series celebrates its 25th Anniversary this year. The program, presented by WBZ NewsRadio 1030 and the DCR offers free HD movies every Friday night at the DCR Hatch Shell on the Charles River Esplanade. All movies are family friendly. Guests are encouraged to bring blankets, chairs and picnic materials to set up on the lawn. Games, food samples, free giveaways and other such activities begin at 6pm and the movies will start at sunset, around 8:30pm. In the case of rain, the Free Friday Flicks Hotline at 617-787-7200 will have cancellation information.

Summer in the Parks 2010 Outdoor Film Series
This free film series is presented by The Brookline Parks and Open Spaces Division and the Brookline Recreation Department. This year’s theme is Monster Splash!

Made in Massachusetts Free Film Series
The Made in Massachusetts film series is a year long program created at Boston Public Library to celebrate movies that were filmed in the state of Massachusetts.
A new film is presented at 6pm on the Monday of each week. The free movie events are open to the public and take place in the Rabb Lecture Hall of the Boston Public Library’s Central Location at 700 Boylston Street, Boston, MA 02116. The facilities are wheelchair accessible.
The movie selections, which include both new hits as well as older classics, are chosen according to a predetermined monthly title. July’s free movie theme is “Danger in the Water”. The August films fall under “Comedy”.

Free Friday Flicks at the Hatch Shell
The Free Friday Flicks free movie series celebrates its 25th Anniversary this year. The program, presented by WBZ NewsRadio 1030 and the DCR offers free HD movies every Friday night at the DCR Hatch Shell on the Charles River Esplanade. All movies are family friendly. Guests are encouraged to bring blankets, chairs and picnic materials to set up on the lawn. Games, food samples, free giveaways and other such activities begin at 6pm and the movies will start at sunset, around 8:30pm. In the case of rain, the Free Friday Flicks Hotline at 617-787-7200 will have cancellation information.

Country Joe McDonald of Country Joe & The Fish, one of the legendary performers of the original 1969 Woodstock Festival, will appear at The Regent Theatre in Arlington to play a tribute show for Woody Guthrie. The Boston Harborfest 2010 Fourth of July Festival will celebrate its 29th anniversary this year. The Harborfest Boston Festival consists of six full days of over 200 activities, designed to explore Boston's colonial and maritime history and celebrate the significant role the city had in defining America. The Goethe Institute Boston and Coolidge Corner Theatre present Berlin 36, a film based loosely on the life of Olympic High-Jumper Gretel Bergmann, who must deal with various struggles that come with being a German-Jewish competitor in the 1936 Berlin Olympics in a Fascist Germany with Hitler in power. This film will be presented as part of the Goethe German Films Series, which features new and award winning German films with a focus on new directors and films that are rarely shown outside Europe. The Boston Harborfest 2010 Fourth of July Festival will celebrate its 29th anniversary this year. The Harborfest Boston Festival consists of six full days of over 200 activities, designed to explore Boston's colonial and maritime history and celebrate the significant role the city had in defining America. Boston Harborfest begins with an Opening Ceremony (at Faneuil Hall) on June 30th and will run through July 5th. Activities scheduled for this popular Boston event include A Party Over the Plaza, Chowderfest, live music entertainment, historical reenactments and walking tours. Menino, Boston Parks Commissioner Antonia Pollak, and Four Seasons Hotel Boston General Manager Bill Taylor will lead a celebration in the Public Garden to welcome the swans back to their "lagoon". Festivities will be offered in the form of a brass band, face painting and food vendors offering refreshments and free samples. There will also be a parade beginning at 11:30am at the conrer of Beacon St. and Charles St. by the Make Way For Ducklings statue.

Sports Images, Inc. is bringing Number 4, Bobby Orr to a mystery location in Boston for a special meet and greet. Not much is being revealed about this rare opportunity, but the event website says the location will be disclosed to VIP ticket holders only. Upon first reading this, one might be led to think there are general non-VIP ticket holders as well, but after rereading the elusive details 10 or so times I've come to the conclusion that all of the event *tickets* are VIP and there are apparently 250 of them available. Meaning it appears that there are three packages one can purchase in relation to this event but only one of them allow you to actually attend the meet and greet. The Harvard Film Archive presents The Rose Seller (La vendedora de rosas), a story about Colombian street children, poverty, violence and drugs modeled after The Little Match Girl by Hans Christian Andersen. The Director, Victor Manuel Gaviria, is especially recognized for his use of nonprofessional actors and his "eclectic" visual style. His "ability to blend registers and styles lends Gaviria’s work a complexity often lacking in the Colombian films of previous decades that had sought to address the country’s poverty and ended up seeming to exploit it..."
