Free Days at Boston Area Museums
Going to the museum doesn't have to be expensive. Get your timing right and you might be able to get in for free. Here's an overview of various free museum admission programs and a few 'not free but cheaper' promotions that will at least save you a few bucks on the museum tickets.

Public Open Night at the Observatory
The BU Observatory is open on Wednesday nights for the public to learn about astronomy, with opportunities to view the night sky through telescopes and binoculars. As long as the weather is clear, the observatory will open to the public at 7:30pm in the Fall and Winter months and at 8:30pm in the Spring and Summer. The program generally lasts an hour.
The Coit Observatory is located at Boston University, 725 Commonwealth Ave., above the Astronomy Department. The stairway to the observatory is on the fifth floor next to room 520. For more information call 617-353-2630.
Always Free Admission to the Commonwealth Museum
The Museum of Massachusetts History is always free to enjoy. The museum is located at 220 Morrissey Blvd, Boston 02125. For more info, call 617-727-9268.

In honor of the museum's founder, anyone with the name Isabella will be granted free admission to the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum. Isabellas also receive a 10% discount in the museum shop. This special free ticket promotion lasts forever. Read details.
Last Saturdays Free for Families at the ICA
On the last Saturday of every month except December, families of up to two adults with children 12 and under can enjoy free admission to the Institute of Contemporary Art.
Youth 17 and under are free every day.
Historic Boston Mansion: Boston Residents Get Free Admission
The Otis House offers free admission to Historic New England members and Boston residents. The Otis House historic mansion is located at the foot of Beacon Hill on Lynde Street next to the Old West Church. Learn more about Otis House Museum.

Save two dollars off of the price of a regular adult or senior admission ticket at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum when you show your ticket stub from the Museum of Fine Arts, and vice versa. The promotion is only valid if you visit the museums within two days of one another.

Save the Date: Berklee Beantown Jazz Festival-Sept. 15-25
Berklee College of Music and Target present the 10th Annual Berklee Beantown Jazz Festival, traditionally drawing in visitors from all over New England to experience performances from 30 acts at various Boston and area venues, during a span of 10 full days. This year's Boston Jazz Festival will pay tribute to the music and culture of New Orleans, post Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.
The Berklee Beantown Jazz Festival will take place from September 15th-25th and will feature a collection of local acts as well as artists who have achieved international recognition. Prices will vary by show; some will be free. Additionally, on the final day, Saturday, September 25th, the festival will take over six blocks in Boston's South End neighborhood from Noon to 6pm for a free outdoor festival, which will be suitable for all ages. Last year this final festival event attracted up to 80,000 visitors.

There are several programs going on right now that offer free admission to musuems and attractions thoughout the United States. Details vary according to the promotion but most of the offers are valid on certain days at certain museums and some of them expire within the next month.

Bike-In Free Movie Nights at Bikes Not Bombs
The Bikes Not Bombs bicycle shop in Jamaica Plain is yet another source of free movies in Boston.
The public is invited to bike-in to the lawn area just outside of the Bikes Not Bombs bicycle shop, located at 18 Bartlett Square, Jamaica Plain, 02130, for the 2010 Summer Bike-In Movie Series. At dark, around 8pm, movies will be projected onto a big screen as long as the weather is appropriate. If the weather is not appropriate, rescheduling information will be available on the Bikes Not Bombs Facebook page.
Blankets, chairs and picnics are encouraged.
Aside from the free films incentive, Bikes Not Bombs seems an excellent place to support. I personally do not ride a bicycle only because I'm a total klutz. I walk instead. But if it were safe for me to ride, I would honestly make the trek from Somerville to Jamaica Plain to use Bikes Not Bombs services. Not only do they sell new and used bikes, parts and accessories, but they also do repair work, offer classes and take part in ongoing worldwide efforts to promote peace, social justice and a sustainable planet- simultaneously- which is especially cool.
They also host great events.
Such as, for instance, the 2010 Summer Bike-In Movie Series mentioned somewhere above.

*The Impossible Hour (50 min) In a velodrome in Mexico City, 1974, cycling legends Ole Ritter and Eddy Merckx compete for the world hour record.
Thursday, July 22
Hell On Wheels, (123 min) Award-winning film captures the highs and lows of the centennial 2003 Tour de France, with a focus on the personal relationship of two German teammates in their 11th Tour, interspersed with incredible footage of highlights from the race (including Lance Armstrong’s stunning crash and recovery) and vintage clips from 100 years of the Tour.
Thursday, August 26
Stars and Water Carriers (90 min) Auteur Jørgen Leth documents the 1973 Giro d’Italia. Considered one of the best films ever made on professional cycling. If you saw A Sunday in Hell you won’t want to miss this.

Klunkerz (90 min), A fun and fascinating look at the gritty early days of mountain bike development on Mt. Tam in Marin County, California in the 1970s. Gary Fisher, Tom Ritchey and others tell their side of the story.

Members of the public are invited to Forest Hills in Jamaica Plain to celebrate the memories of their loved ones who have passed. The annual Lantern Festival is a tradition based on the Japanese Bon Festival, where visitor decorate paper lanterns with calligraphy and messages for their dead loved ones and at sunset, send them afloat in a small lake. Thousands gather to participate in this festival every year and with all of the candle lit lanterns set adrift at once, the sight is sure to be both breathtaking and emotional. The Lantern Festival at Forest Hills will also offer multi-cultural dance and music entertainment.

Free Rides to the Franklin Park Zoo: July 10 & 17
Have you been wanting to visit the Franklin Park Zoo but have been putting it off because of your lack of transportation?
Or maybe you didn't realize how close this animal attraction was to Downtown Boston. For the record, it is actually located 5 miles outside of the city, in Dorchester, at One Franklin Park Road. But if you go on July 10th or 17th you won't need to know those facts because the zoo is offering free shuttle rides from a couple different pick up stops in Downtown Boston.
The free shuttle to the Franklin Park Zoo will operate between 10am and 4pm continuously on July 10 (this weekend) and July 17th.
The pickup locations are as follows:
*Trinity Place @ St. James, adjacent to the Copley Fairmont Plaza Hotel, Boston Back Bay
*Washington St @ Avery, in front of BiNA Osteria, Downtown Crossing.
There will be an attendant and signs at both stops.
The trip to and from the zoo will take about 15-20 minutes each way and will take passengers on a first come first served basis. The shuttle will be dropping people off after they visit the zoo at the same locations where they were picked up.

But if you go on July 10th or 17th you won't need to know those facts because the zoo is offering free shuttle rides from a couple different pick up stops in Downtown Boston.
The free shuttle to the Franklin Park Zoo will operate between 10am and 4pm continuously on July 10 (this weekend) and July 17th.
The pickup locations are as follows:
*Trinity Place @ St. James, adjacent to the Copley Fairmont Plaza Hotel, Boston Back Bay
*Washington St @ Avery, in front of BiNA Osteria, Downtown Crossing.
There will be an attendant and signs at both stops.
The trip to and from the zoo will take about 15-20 minutes each way and will take passengers on a first come first served basis. The shuttle will be dropping people off after they visit the zoo at the same locations where they were picked up.

Free Shakespeare on the Boston Common
It’s almost time again for the summer series of free Shakespeare plays on the Common, presented by the Commonwealth Shakespeare Company in partnership with the City of Boston and Mayor Menino. The play this year is Othello, directed by Steven Maler.
The free Shakespeare shows will take place Tuesdays through Saturdays at 8pm and Sundays at 7pm from July 28 through August 15, 2010. There will also be a special matinee performance on August 8 at 2pm. In case of heavy rain or lightning storms the show will be cancelled. If the weather is questionable, the Weather Hotline at 617-426-0863 ext.7 (call one to two hours before show) will inform you of that night’s show status.
This event is free and open to the public. Blankets, picnics and (short) lawn or beach chairs are encouraged. Note that those who must watch the performance using a tall beach chair will be required to sit in a special “tall beach chair section”.
An estimated 100,000 people, from Boston and beyond, are predicted to attend 18 performances. It has been the trend in previous years that people begin to arrive up to two hours prior to the start of the show to grab the hot spots on the lawn; it fills up quickly.

A new film is presented at 6pm on the Monday of each week. The free movie events are open to the public and take place in the Rabb Lecture Hall of the Boston Public Library’s Central Location at 700 Boylston Street, Boston, MA 02116. The facilities are wheelchair accessible.

Coolidge Corner Theatre and Boston Lyric Opera (BLO) co-present Eugene Onegin, an opera based on the classic Russian novel by Aleksandr Pushkin. The Boston Harborfest 2010 Fourth of July Festival will celebrate its 29th anniversary this year. The Boston Harborfest 2010 Fourth of July Festival will celebrate its 29th anniversary this year. The Harborfest Boston Festival consists of six full days of over 200 activities, designed to explore Boston's colonial and maritime history and celebrate the significant role the city had in defining America. Boston Harborfest begins with an Opening Ceremony (at Faneuil Hall) on June 30th and will run through July 5th. The Boston Playwrights' Theatre 12th Annual Boston Theatre Marathon will feature 50 ten minute plays by 50 New England Playwrights presented by 50 New England Theatre Companies, all in a span of ten hours.
